The tires of her bike bit at the dirt road as she pedaled toward the house. The tanned brown wooden walls always gave her a sense of home, even more than her own house sometimes. The teen on the bike gave a heaving sigh as she noticed there was no one up and about yet, and she rolled her eyes. It was just an hour past sunrise. Why were people not up and about? Anywhere toward seven o'clock was a good time to be awake in Mallory's opinion. Just as long as there was excitement, horses and food. She could live if there was one item missing from her short list, but it would not be the same.
She flipped her leg over the bike and walked it around the short fence in the front of the house, eyeing the new chestnut horse in the paddock. Why it was there, she did not know. But she wanted to find out! The new Dude ranch Lou had put together with the less-than-well wishes of Jack, was a success. It had had a few well paying customers since it had opened a few weeks ago and Mallory had seen a few less horses coming in and out from the outer world. She had her suspicions that Lou had refused to take in a few of the poor horses who needed help, but she knew that the older girl would never do that since if Amy found out, there would be a bigger fight than World War II !
She leaned her bike against the thin wooden rails and walked up the steps, pushing open the door and making herself at home right away. She made a beeline for the fridge, not having eaten before she left home, and found a pitcher of lemonade awaiting her thirst. She smiled and pulled it out of the fridge, looking around for another human life form as she stole to the cupboard for a glass.
With a glass of cool lemonade in her warm hands, she sat down and brushed stray yellowed hairs out of her eyes. "Where is everyone?" She muttered.
